Shine Your Light

Have you ever been in a room that was pitch black—no light, no windows, totally dark? What happened when you turned on a flashlight or struck a match? The entire room lit up. You couldn’t believe how much light that one match or flashlight gave off. That’s exactly the kind of effect you can have in your school and everywhere else in our dark world. The light that Christians give only because of Jesus is the only light this world has.
What would you do if you had a friend who was trapped in a cave with a group of people, and they couldn’t get out because they couldn’t find their way? Let’s say that they all died and when their bodies were found, it was discovered that one of the victims had a perfectly good flashlight in his backpack that would have saved all of their lives if it had been used. Wouldn’t that upset you?
You know what? You are like that same flashlight that could have saved those lives. Every day you come across the paths of people who desperately need the light of Jesus. Don’t hide the light. Use it to impact someone’s life forever.
I have come as light into the world so that whoever believes in me would not stay in darkness. John 12:46 NCV

What a Chore!

Don’t you just love chores? Okay, so the idea of putting away glasses, hauling out the trash, scrubbing the tub, or firing up the weed whacker probably isn’t a thrill.
If you are like most people, you’ve argued with your parents about some chore at one point or another. Maybe you just didn’t want to do it. Maybe you were annoyed because it was your brother’s or sister’s job. Maybe you argued because you already did it and space aliens flew in from another galaxy and messed up all your hard work with a weird little ray gun. Maybe you had no problem with the chore itself but just forgot it, and you were embarrassed to have an angry parent remind you. Or maybe your parents asked you to do dishes; so you did them all right, very loudly—while banging pots around and grumbling under your breath.
Here, the Book of Philippians says to do everything without complaining or arguing. That’s not easy, but it is possible. Paul managed it while sitting in prison. So the next time mom asks you to fold laundry, or dad wants you to rake leaves or help him change the oil in the sedan, don’t explode. If they tend to ask you to do the same stuff on a regular basis, make out a schedule that keeps you a step ahead of them. And keep smelling salts around for your parents when they pass out . . . they will find these changes shocking!
