Virtue Building: Patience

In a world that worships instant gratification for every desire, patience is a rare quality.  We want stuff, and we want it now.  But patience is vital.  It should be a deep-rooted way of life for Christians.

God is patient with us (1 Timothy 1:16; 2 Peter 3:8-9).  As God-followers, we must realize that God is pleased when we patiently wait on him and have patience with other people, just like he’s been patient with us.

Patience is the ability to endure anything…waiting on God, suffering through trials, resisting temptation, dealing with imperfect situations, and loving people who seem “unlovable.”

Patience comes from the Holy Spirit working in your life (Galatians 5:22) – it certainly doesn’t come naturally!  Second Corinthians 6:6 says that we show we’re servants of God through our patience (among other virtues).  Ephesians 4:1-3, Colossians 3:12-17, 1 Timothy 6:11, 2 Timothy 3:10, and Revelation 13:10 clearly teach how patience is an important piece of the puzzle.  Living to please God always includes the quality of patience.

Love requires patience (1 Corinthians 13:4-7).  Hope and faith both include the idea of patiently waiting for God (Romans 12:12; James 5:11).  Definitely don’t underestimate the importance of being patient!

Power of Prayer

If you’re looking for a more vibrant, meaningful prayer life, the best place to start is in Scripture. One of the first things you’ll learn is the importance of regularly devoting serious chunks or time to prayer.  Throughout history, godly men and women have spent significant amounts of time talking to God on a daily basis.

Keeping Your Focus

Joshua 8:32-35

Have you ever become so caught up in the stuff of life that you’ve forgotten about God?  Daily activities like going to school, doing homework, and hanging out with friends take up so much of your time that you begin to neglect your relationship with God.  You may even be busying yourself with God-related activities– going to church, taking part in Bible studies, or serving in ministry– but somehow, you’re leaving him out of your life.  It’s like you’re in the same room with him, but there’s no interaction.  You’re lost your focus.

The Israelites were in serious danger of losing their focus.  God had led them into the Promised Land and defeated the people living there.  They could’ve easily become more focused on who they were fighting against than who they were fighting for.  To prevent this from happening, Joshua read God’s word.  As they listened, they were reminded that it wasn’t about gaining land – it was about living for God.

Are you letting your busyness of life distract you from nurturing your relationship with God? He wants your life to be centered on him- for everything you do to flow out of an authentic love for him, not obligation or habit.  Just as the Israelites did, focus on God’s presence and his Word- and do this daily.  Keep your life focused on him; there’s no better way to live!

Psalm 19

The heavens declare the glory of God, and the skies announce what his hands have made. Day after day they tell the story; night after night they tell it again.  They have no speech or words; they have no  voice to be heard.  But their message goes out through all the world; their words go everywhere on earth.

Psalm 19:1-4

Beauty Is The Beast

She’s by far the prettiest girl in the whole school.  Her hair is always perfect.  Her smile: dazzling.  And her figure can stop traffic- in the middle of the Indy 500.  All of which combines to prompt one major, mystifying question: What is she doing with him?

That is the premise of a familiar French fairy tale, but the story continues to surprise and fascinate audiences all over the world.  After appearing in print for the first time nearly three hundred years ago, Beauty and the Beast has since been repeatedly translated and adapted.

It’s an old story.  But the message is as current as that new couple in your fourth period class that makes everyone wonder, What does she see in him?  I mean, really, come on!  Why would a gorgeous girl, looking like she just stepped off the cover of some magazine, go out with some dude with a bad haircut (on his face!)?  Much less fall in love with him! Get real!

Of course, that’s a large part of the story’s appeal.  However it is adapted, the Beauty and the Best story is about someone who is attracted to another person not because of appearance, but in spite of it.  It’s about loving someone for inner qualities, like sensitivity and compassion.  And part of the show’s charm is that love like that is rare.

That’s because too many of us have bought into the Cover Girl Myth.  We’ve actually come to believe that looks are everything, that if a girl doesn’t look like a runway model or a guy like a movie star, they’re unattractive.  But that’s a myth.

Television, magazine, movies and the Internet constantly drum into us a prepackaged image of what is beautiful and what is not.  The media machine also touts the idea that beautiful=happy.  Now, please understand that Christians aren’t obligated to be ugly.  But we’re not obligated to look like a supermodel or a bodybuilder either.  We need to realize that there’s a lot more to beauty than curvaceous figures, bulging biceps, and perfect hair.  Beauty more often results from a person’s attitude and disposition.  God chose David to be king of Israel, not because of his appearance or physical attributes, “for the Lord seeth not as man seeth,” the Bible says, “for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart” (1 Samuel 16:7 KJV).

Often, in fact, beauty, as the world defines it, is not a blessing.  Incredible as it may seem, sometimes beauty is the beast that drives a girl to depression or robs a boy of his self-esteem.  There are many “beautiful” people who happen to be lonely, insecure, and unfulfilled.

The truth is, if you’re seeking happiness in the color of your hair or the cut of your clothes, you’re sure to be disappointed.  Learn to look beyond the reflection in the mirror.  Whether or not you’re pleased with the person you see there will have more to do with what you can’t see than with what you can.
